Thembelihle Cele: Embracing Strength Through Nala in 'The Lion King'
Thembelihle Cele's journey to becoming Nala in 'The Lion King' was not the path her parents envisioned for her. Initially encouraged to pursue careers in accounting or engineering, Cele discovered her passion for theater during her freshman year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal after watching a performance by Heather Headley. This pivotal moment redirected her focus towards the performing arts, leading her to take singing and dance lessons and enroll in drama studies.
Her dedication paid off when she joined the original cast of the U.K. and Ireland tour in 2012, eventually becoming a full-time Nala. Cele reflects on her growth through this role, stating that embodying Nala's strength has empowered her both on and off stage. The production emphasizes the human aspects of its animal characters, allowing performers to connect deeply with their roles. For Cele, portraying Nala has not only been a professional achievement but also a personal journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

The Lion King Spokane reviews
Try Segerstrom instead
I love the lion King show. I have now seen it at both Segerstrom, and at the Pantages. I was very disappointed with the experience at the Pantages. I could not believe the bathroom attendants, clapping their hands and shouting “rush and flush ladies rush and flush” repeatedly to get women through the line quicker, it was super tacky. Also, the lighting at the Pantages is very unfortunate for the show. The aisles were completely dark when the characters proceeded down the aisle, which is one of the most exciting parts of the show. I really love the baboon character. She was just as beautiful as always.
